The rabbit r1 is your personal AI assistant that fits in your pocket. This custom-built, standalone device helps you get things done by operating apps and services on your behalf through intuitive natural language commands.
This article provides steps and tips on how to unbox, set up, and use your rabbit r1. Review the r1 user guide or follow along with the step-by-step instructions below.
Get your rabbit r1 ready
Open the box, remove your rabbit r1 from the packaging, and then review the tips below to get your r1 ready.
- Save the plastic case. Your r1 comes in a folding case that can be used as a charging stand and storage case.
- Take off the screen peel. Gently peel off and remove the screen protector from your r1.
- Charge your r1. Make sure to plug in your r1 with a USB-C charging cable before you start the set up process. Your r1 does not come with a charging cable or power adapter.
Activate your rabbit r1
Follow the steps below to set up your rabbit r1.
- Power on your r1. Hold down the side button until you see the rabbit logo appear on screen.
- Press the side button to continue.
- Connect to the internet. Select your local Wi-Fi network and follow the on-screen prompts to connect. Your r1 needs to stay connected to the internet through Wi-Fi to complete set up.
- Login to the rabbithole and activate your r1. Go to rabbit.tech/activate and create a new rabbithole account or log in to an existing account.
- In rabbithole, agree to the terms and click continue.
- Click link r1 in the window on the top right corner. Enter your user name and then click continue to generate the QR code to link your r1 to your rabbithole account.
- Press the side button on your r1 to continue the set up process, and then scan the QR code with your r1 to link your device to your rabbithole account.
- After your r1 is linked to your rabbithole account, press the side button to continue.
- Create a passcode. Press the side button on your r1 to continue. Set a four digit passcode that you will remember, and then follow the prompts on your r1 to continue.
- Get the latest over-the-air (OTA) updates. Connect your r1 to a charger and follow the prompts to download the latest OTA updates. Note that your r1's battery must be charged to at least 50% before it will begin downloading an OTA.
Tip: After setting up your r1 for the first time, your device may need to download more than one over-the-air (OTA) update to be fully up-to-date. If you find the touch screen unresponsive during this process, use the scroll wheel to navigate the menus and press the side button to select menu items. After the device software has been updated to rabbitOS 2, you will be able to use the touch screen.

Use your rabbit r1
After you finish the initial set up of your rabbit r1, an interactive tutorial will appear on the screen and show you the basics of how to interact with your r1.

- Explore your surroundings with vision mode. Open the camera card or double-click the side button to turn on the camera and open vision mode.

- Dive into the rabbithole. rabbithole is where you can find your personal journal with records of all interactions, images, and voice recordings.
- Enable experimental features. Turn on experimental features like generative UI or magic voice in rabbithole.
- Install a SIM card for connectivity on the go. Insert a nano-SIM card with an active data plan to use your r1 when Wi-Fi is not available.
- Pair your favorite headphones. Turn your r1 into a portable music player by pairing Bluetooth headphones or speakers.
- Access quick settings. Swipe down from the top of any screen to quickly control the brightness and volume, or to access the camera, keyboard, or settings menu. You can also turn off the display by tapping the lock icon.
- Adjust the settings. Tap the settings card to open the settings menu, or tap the gear icon from the quick settings.
