Your rabbit r1 remembers things about you, so you don't have to repeat yourself. Which memory your r1 uses depends on who is answering:
- rabbit OS3 answers your r1 by default. It uses your OS3 memory, which is the same memory OS3 uses on the web, in the desktop app, in Messages and in Telegram.
- The classic rabbit assistant answers when retro mode is on. It uses classic r1 memory, the memories you built up on your r1 before OS3.
The two are kept separately. OS3 does not read your classic r1 memories, and the classic assistant does not read what OS3 remembers.
This article explains how both work, how to manage them, and answers common questions.
memory in OS3
When OS3 answers your r1, it draws on the same memory as every other place you use OS3. Something you told OS3 in your browser is known to your r1, and the other way round. Each place keeps its own conversation, but they all share one memory.
OS3 remembers two kinds of things:
- Your personality details. Things like the name you gave OS3, how you like it to talk to you, your preferred language, and your location and timezone. OS3 sets these up with you when you first set up your account.
- What comes up in your conversations. Facts you mention and the outcome of work OS3 has done for you. OS3 looks these up when they are relevant, so you don't have to say them again.
OS3's memory runs on the model you choose in OS3 under settings → api keys, using your own key. Learn more about bringing your own key.
how to add to os3's memory
You don't need to turn anything on. Hold the side button on your r1 and talk as usual. OS3 picks up useful details as you go, and you can tell it things directly, such as "I'm vegetarian" or "from now on, keep your answers short".
how to review or change what OS3 remembers
There is no screen in OS3 settings that lists your memories. Instead, ask OS3 in any channel:
- See what it knows. Ask something like "what do you know about me?"
- Change a detail. Say something like "my timezone is now Pacific time" or "be more formal with me".
- Start your personality setup again. Ask OS3 to redo your personality setup from the beginning. This deletes your personality details and OS3 asks you its setup questions again.
Note: clear conversation in OS3 under settings → account → data reset empties the conversation on your dashboard, but it does not delete what OS3 remembers. To delete everything OS3 holds about you, including its memory, you need to delete your account.
classic r1 memory
Classic r1 memory is the memory feature from before OS3. It is only used when the classic rabbit assistant answers your r1, which is when retro mode is on. With retro mode off, your classic memories are kept but not used.
how to turn classic memory on or off
You can only turn classic memory on and off on your r1.
- Open the settings menu in one of the following ways:
- From your r1's home screen, swipe up or scroll with the scroll wheel and select the settings card
- You can also swipe down from the top of any screen to access the quick settings screen, and then tap the gear icon to open settings
- Tap magic
- Tap memory and toggle the switch on or off
This switch only affects classic memory. It does not turn OS3's memory on or off.
the memory interview
The first time you turn classic memory on, your r1 offers a short interview with the rabbit memory operator, whether or not retro mode is on.
- Tap the touch screen to select continue
- You will receive a virtual call from the rabbit memory operator
- Tap to answer the virtual call and start the interview. You do not need to use the push-to-talk (PTT) button to respond.
What you say in the interview is saved to classic r1 memory only, so OS3 does not use it.
Note: The rabbit memory operator will try to call you two times. After the second failed attempt, classic memory turns off.
how to save and manage classic memories
With retro mode on:
- Save a memory. Press the side button and say something like "remember this about me" or "save this memory".
- Review and remove memories. Open the settings menu on your r1 and go to memory. Deleting a memory cannot be undone.
Warning: Do not save sensitive information like passwords, credit card numbers or banking information in either memory.
how to fix issues with memory on rabbit r1
- Check who is answering. If your r1 doesn't seem to know something you told it, check whether retro mode is on in OS3 under settings → r1. With retro mode on, your r1 uses classic memory. With it off, it uses OS3's memory.
- Correct the detail. Tell OS3 the right information, or with retro mode on, remove the classic memory in your r1's settings menu under memory.
- Look for conflicting or extreme instructions. Two instructions that contradict each other, or one like "include the word banana in every sentence", can make answers unreliable. Ask OS3 to change them, or remove them from classic memory.
common questions
does my r1 use the memories I saved before OS3?
Only when retro mode is on. OS3 starts its own memory and does not read your classic r1 memories. Your classic memories are not deleted.
does turning off memory on my r1 stop OS3 remembering things?
No. The memory switch in your r1's settings menu only controls classic memory.
can I take the memory interview again?
Only with retro mode on. Tell your r1 something like "I want to take the memory interview". Your r1 will prepare the virtual call and tell you to quickly press the side button five times to refresh. After the refresh, you will receive the virtual call. The interview only adds to classic memory.
how long does the memory interview take?
About three to five minutes.
in what regions does the memory interview work?
The rabbit memory operator uses a realtime voice model from OpenAI, so the interview is only available in regions that OpenAI supports.
will I keep my memories if I factory reset or unlink my r1?
Yes. Both OS3's memory and classic memory belong to your rabbit account, not your device. They are not deleted if you factory reset your r1 or unlink it from your account.
