r1 creations are small apps that run full-screen on your rabbit r1: tools, games and utilities that use the touchscreen, side button, scroll wheel, microphone, camera, speaker and motion sensor. You can ask OS3 to build one for you, or install one someone else made.

This article explains how to make a creation with OS3, how OS3 installs it on your r1, where to find your creations, and how to install other creations.

what you need to make a creation with OS3

  • An OS3 account that is set up. Finish setup at os3.rabbit.tech first. See how to create an OS3 account.
  • A computer connected with rabbit agent, and online. OS3 builds the creation on that computer.
  • Your API key. OS3 builds creations with the same API key it uses for everything else, so any usage charges come from your model provider. See do I need to pay for an API key.
  • An r1 linked to your account, if you want OS3 to host the creation and install it on your r1 for you. See how to link your r1. Without a linked r1 you can still make a creation, but you host it yourself (see below).
  • Retro mode turned off, if you are starting from your r1.

how to make a creation

from your r1

  1. Open the creations card on your r1.
  2. Tap "create with intern".
  3. Describe what you want. Your r1 talks it through with you to work out what the creation should do.
  4. Approve hosting and install. Before it starts building, OS3 asks for your approval to host the creation at a public URL and install it on your r1. Answer out loud on your r1.
  5. Wait for it to finish. OS3 builds the creation on your connected computer. When it is done, your r1 tells you it is ready and the creation appears in your creations within a few seconds. Your r1 needs to be online.

If your account is not set up for OS3 yet, your r1 points you to os3.rabbit.tech. If no connected computer is online, or retro mode is on, your r1 tells you and nothing is built.

Ask OS3 to make an r1 creation, in your own words. For example: "make an r1 creation that shows the next three trains from my station". OS3 asks for the same approval before it builds, and installs the creation on your linked r1 when it is done.

what you are approving

OS3 asks for your permission to host this creation at a public URL and install it on your r1, and anyone with that URL can add it to theirs. The approval covers that one creation only, so each new creation asks again.

If you deny it, nothing is hosted. You can ask OS3 to hand the creation over for you to host yourself instead.

how to make a creation without a linked r1

If no r1 is linked to your account, OS3 still builds the creation, but it does not host or install it. Instead it gives you the files and a share link. Put the files on any HTTPS web host you choose, and the share link shows a QR code you can scan with an r1 to install it. Nothing is uploaded to rabbit's hosting.

where to find your creations in OS3

  1. Open OS3 and go to settings → r1. This section only appears once a device is linked.
  2. Scroll to creations. Every creation OS3 has hosted for you is listed, newest first, with its icon, name, description and the day it was made.
  3. Click a creation to open it in a new browser tab, or click copy link to copy its address so you can share it or install it on another r1.

Your creations also appear at the top of open r1 media, and you can show only them with the creations filter.

Creations you added on your r1 yourself, by QR code or from the public tab, are not listed here. Neither are creations OS3 handed to you to host yourself.

how to change a creation

Ask OS3 to change it, for example "make my train times creation show five trains instead of three". OS3 updates the creation on your r1 and in your list, at a new address, and keeps the creation's saved data on your r1. Anyone you shared the earlier version with keeps that version. Share the new link if you want them to have the update.

how to install a creation on r1

  1. Open the creations card on your r1.
  2. From here, there are two options: a) add via QR code, b) install from the public tab.
    1. Add via QR code: Tap "add via QR code" on the create tab, and scan the code for any creation. You can visit the creations gallery to find a growing selection of creations that you can install on your r1 for free.
    2. Install from the public tab: Go to the public tab, choose any creation you want to use, and click install.
  3. Access each creation's unique card: Scroll to the bottom of your card stack to open any creation that you have installed on your r1.

how to make a creation with third-party tools

  1. Visit our GitHub repository: The GitHub repository contains some documentation and code snippets that can help you experiment more when making creations.
  2. Host the creation: Many members of our community have used Netlify and GitHub Pages among other tools for hosting.
  3. Install it on r1: You'll find a QR code creator in the GitHub repository. This will give you the fields to fill in (such as name and description) and, once done, allow you to generate a scannable QR code.

technical limitations of creations

  • Screen size: Must fit a small 240x282 pixel portrait screen
  • Performance: Limited processing power; avoid heavy graphics or complex animations
  • Storage: Limited space for large files or extensive data
  • Multi-tasking: Only one creation can run at a time
  • No hosted backend: A creation is a set of web files. It can use public web services, voice input through the side button, and the r1's assistant, but it cannot run its own server

common questions

do I still need intern tasks to make a creation?

No. OS3 builds creations with your own API key. Your model provider may charge for that usage.

how do I remove a creation from my r1?

Remove it on your r1. This takes it off your device, but the hosted copy stays at its address and stays in your list in OS3, so anyone you shared it with can keep using it.

what happens to my hosted creations if I delete my rabbit account?

They are all deleted, including every earlier version. Anyone who installed one of them from its link loses it. See how to export or delete your rabbit data.

can anyone see my creation?

Anyone with its address can open it and add it to their r1. Treat the link as public and do not put private information in a creation.
